Alpine Snowboarding Club Now Based in Park City

Looking to Get Name Out It's about Going FAST

Chris Karol remembers when Jake Burton was making snowboards in his garage. He remembers hearing about snowboards through the skateboarding grapevine growing up.

Now a seasoned snowboarding veteran, Karol has always enjoyed riding a snowboard and riding fast. So it should come as no surprise that he started the First Alpine Snowboard Team program, more commonly known as "FAST."

The program is based in Park City for the first time this year and has a training hill at the Utah Olympic Park along with an agreement to ride and practice at Canyons resort.

While alpine snowboarding isn't the most popular segment of the sport, it doesn't lack in dedicated athletes.

"A lot of snowboarders don't even know it exists," Karol said. "But it's racing."

Karol used to race back in his heyday, but is now focused on promoting the sport to anyone who wants to listen.

"Alpine has taken its own path," he said. "It used to be very tight-knit: there used to be a tour that always traveled together."

According to Karol, the alpine snowboarding realm is as strong as it's ever been with many athletes getting started at younger ages and competing in clubs into their later teens.

"It's fully legit," he said.

Along with partner Srdjan Pantic, director of European development, Karol and FAST are hoping the club can grow stronger.

Choosing to be centered in Park City was simple for Karol and the club.

"We've competed all around the world, and no place is easier than Park City," said Karol of Park City's resorts and proximity to a major airport.

Heather Herde, formerly of Oxford, Conn., grew up snowboarding in Vermont but didn't enjoy all the jumps and tricks that came with freestyle snowboarding; she also preferred to go fast and began competing in alpine when she was younger.

When choosing a college, it came down to the University of Utah or Westminster College. After a friend convinced her Westminster better fit her style, the 22-year-old Herde enrolled and will graduate in the spring with a degree in environmental science.

Her association with FAST has only helped her career along and she gives much of the credit to Karol.

"Chris has helped us out a lot," Herde said. "Everybody likes him, everybody progressed, and he knew what he was talking about."

Herde reiterated that if not for Karol and the club she wouldn't be where she is been today.

She has qualified for the FIS Snowboard World Championships in Spain, but will be staying in Utah to focus on her last semester of college.

While enrollment in alpine snowboarding continues to grow, Karol still views it at its purest form.

"Snowboarding hasn't changed," he said. "The gates have changed a bit. Racing is racing."

As for FAST, it has found a home in Park City and will continue to reach out to those who either don't know or don't believe in the potential.

"(Karol) has been doing really well getting people to hear about us," Herde said. "He's been really helping us out for that extra voice."

Parkites Return Home during Bobsled and Skeleton World Cup

Good Old Home Cooking

To say they mean business may be a bit of an understatement.

The Parkites returning to their old stomping grounds this week for the third leg of the bobsled and skeleton World Cup at the Utah Olympic Park were ready and prepared to put on a show for the home crowd.

From comments provided by a team press release earlier this week, Shauna Rohbock said:

"I've told (family) in the past that I'm not here to babysit, and they understand we've got a lot to do during a World Cup stop," said Rohbock, a Provo native that has been training and racing at the Utah Olympic Park for years.

Fans packed railings Thursday and Friday to get a glimpse of locals such as bobsledders Rohbock and Valerie Fleming, skeleton competitor Kimber Gabryszak and of course, gold medalist Steve Holcomb, who will be racing with his Night Train team that plan on defending their four-man bobsled World Cup title from last season's circuit.

Holcomb piloted the United States' No. 1 four-man bobsled to a victory in the World Cup in Whistler, B.C., two weeks ago and is looking for redemption after falling short in last season's World Cup stop in Park City.

"We've been fast, but unfortunately we didn't win that race last year," Holcomb said in a press release. "I made a mistake at the start and didn't slide very well. That's what happens.

"Since we were home, we were expected to win, and to finish ninth was a disappointment. I think this year, we are ready to go, and it's going to be our race."

The added pressure of returning back to the track that became their home away from home does add some extra incentive to perform well; not to mention they're facing the best competition in the world.

"You don't really think about it until after your run," said Rohbock referencing the hometown feel and atmosphere. "If you do well, you are glad for it. If you don't, you feel bad your friends made the trek up the mountain and stood out in the cold to watch you.

"I think it's more important to represent on your home track. We want to do well against the other countries."

It was Holcomb and his team that ended the 62-year drought for a U.S. bobsled tasting gold, but the Parkite knows what it takes to shine on the biggest stage and sees his familiarity with the course just another plus in this weekend's return.

"I went to school 100 yards from the track," Holcomb was quoted as saying. "I know a few secrets there. I want to win there. I'd like to sweep the event if we can."

Rohbock was hampered by a quad injury suffered in Calgary a week ago, but practiced Wednesday at the UOP and prepared correctly for her race Friday afternoon.

"It's a track I can do really well on, but it's a pusher's course because it's so short," the release stated.

Gabryszak, who works for Summit County as a planner, had an impressive pair of runs Thursday, coming in 14th overall with a combined time of 1:42:27 finishing directly behind teammate Annie O'Shea, who finished 13th. Gabryszak is in her rookie season on the World Cup circuit and had a personal best start time of 5.09 seconds in her best finish time to date, 51.10 in her second run.

"I broke my personal best on the runs and I can't ask for more," Gabryszak said in a release Thursday. "I'm happy and glad to be here with my friends and family."

Gabryszak finished 16th both in Whistler and Calgary earlier on this season.

Anja Huber of Germany won the women's skeleton in dominating fashion and won her second consecutive race on the circuit with a combined time of 1:40.62.

Alexander Tretiakov of Russia had impressive times off the block with both 4.52 and 4.53 seconds. Tretiakov moved up all the way from seventh position following his first run to win with a combined time of 1:38.48 in the men's skeleton race.

The most-anticipated race of the weekend will no doubt be Holcomb's Night Train race come Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the UOP, and the reigning Olympic gold medalist knows it.

"When you are born and raised in Park City, there's more pressure because the whole city is riding on my shoulders as opposed to just being an American or a Utah guy," Holcomb said in the release.

Holcomb did not speak directly to the press Wednesday.
