Skiing & Snowboarding in Park City, Utah

Park City is home to three major ski resorts: Park City Mountain Resort®, Deer Valley Resort®, and The Canyons® Resort. The Park City and Deer Valley ski resorts were the major locations for ski and snowboarding events at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

In addition to our three world class ski resorts right here in town, visitors and residents enjoy the close proximity to 8 other great ski resorts all within an hours drive. They include: Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, Snowbasin, Powder Mountain, Wolf Mountain, and Sundance. Additionally, Park City is home of the United States Ski Team, the Utah Olympic Park that includes the bobsled / skeleton / luge track, and training facilities for alpine and inverted ski jumping. Park City is also home to many currently training and retired world-class and Olympic athletes.

Great Reasons to Own Park City Real Estate

Are you looking for a second home, a holiday destination or a new place to live? Then Park City real estate can really fit the bill. The New York Times rated Park City as No. 9 in their "2011 41 places to go in the world."

In North America for 2010 to 2011, the #1 ranked ski resort is Deer Valley, a Park City neighborhood. Deer Valley is sixth in Barron's Magazine's "Top Second Home Communities" list for the fourth year in a row. And for any portfolio, Park City real estate is a definite must.

There will be four new hotels, a golf event, and extended fields of ski resorts all opening up soon to give residents and visitors better access to discover the mountain. Deer Valley Montage launched a 220-room mid-Craftsman style mountain lodge in December 2010. It offers ski-in ski-out access, gas fireplaces in every room, and spa. Other establishments that have opened are the St. Regis Deer Crest, Park City Waldorf Astoria and the Hyatt Lodge Escala.

300 acres of new ski and snowboarding terrain includes 10 new tracks ranging from short to intermediate located in the Canyons resort. They are also introducing what is appointed as the first heated chairlift in North America. There will also be the opening of an after-ski "beach." It is a place where people meet to enjoy the Beach style outdoor chairs, food from the stations, cocktail, and astonishing views of the mountain. This is definitely where the best ski resorts in the country are.

Park City is now better than ever as its tourism grows because of its prime location. Park City is 32 miles east of Salt Lake City and 40 minutes from the airport in Salt Lake. The picturesque mountains, majestic Wasatch of Utah, the counties of Summit and Wasatch, have hidden a place as amazing as this.

More facts: Park City, Utah cradled the Winter Olympics 2002. It is also home to the Sundance Film Festival and the "Greatest Snow on Earth."

There are a number of outdoor attractions in Park City, Utah:

  • Snowboarding
  • Skiing
  • Hiking
  • Fishing
  • Biking 300 miles trail
  • Golf Courses (20 minutes from the Park City)
  • Great Restaurants
  • Great Shopping Malls

If you are a fan of the snowy outdoors, Park City real estate really has all that you're looking for.

Park City Area Resorts Step It Up This Ski Season

Even as Park City's year-round recreational opportunities expand to include increasingly diverse options, the three area resorts Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort and Canyons Resort demonstrate why they remain the community's primary draw. Continually looking to improve and evolve to meet the growing demands of mountain enthusiasts, all three resorts had big announcements this winter.

Canyons Resort

Canyons Resort

Certainly the biggest change for the year are happening at Canyons Resort. Now under the relatively new ownership of Talisker, Canyons (which dropped the preceding "The" as part of a new branding effort), unfurled Phase I of a massive all-mountian Re-Creation. The gondola has been realigned, making it more directly accessible from the Cabriolet. The new Orange Bubble lift with heated seats and a pull-down enclosure is the first of its kind in North America and increases uphill capacity by 47%.

Riders on the Orange Bubble lift pass over a new 20-million gallon reservoir, which more than doubles the resorts snowmaking capabilities. The southern part of Canyons also benefits from the new detachable Iron Mountain lift, which provides access to 300 new acres of northwest facing terrain. Connecting the base of Iron Mountain lift to the base of Tombstone lift, the new Timberline lift moves skiers both directions to provide easy access to the south side of Canyons.

And, at the base of the resort, a new ski beach offers a gathering place throughout the day. From outdoor lounge chairs, guests can order everything from breakfast to aprés ski cocktails from roving waiters. With so much that's new, SKI Magazine call Canyons "the best deal in the states."

Deer Valley ResortDeer Valley Resort

Well, they've done it again. For an unprecedented 4th year in a row, Deer Valley has been voted the #1 ski resort in North America by the readers of SKI Magazine. Lauded for its grooming so precise "you could roll a quarter between the corduroy ridges," decadent food offerings like pork tenderloin mole and banana pecan cake, and an army of pleasant staff to save you from the burden of your equipment, it's no surprise Deer Valley tops the charts in Service, On-Mountain Food, Lodging and Dining.

In early February, Deer Valley played host for the second time (the only resort to have the honor) to the 14th FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships. Sharing hosting duties this year with neighboring Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR), Deer Valley was home to the aerial, moguls, dual moguls and ski cross competitions, while the new ski halfpipe event took place at PCMR. Broadcast across the planet, all events were free to the viewing public, as was the World Cup's Opening Ceremony on Main Street, which included an athlete parade and an outdoor concert with reggae legacy Julian Marley.

With both snow depth and skier day numbers up mid-season over the same time last year, Deer Valley is riding high.

Park City Mountain ResortPark City Mountain Resort

Like neighboring Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort was thrilled to host the world's best freestyle skiers during the Freestyle World Cup Championships. The FIS committee recently voted to add slopestyle skiing and ski halfpipe to the World Championship events (both are being considered for the 2014 Olympics), making February's competition at PCMR the premiere World Cup event for both these disciplines.

PCMR also received a notable ranking 5th in North America and 2nd in Utah from the readers of SKI Magazine. More than any other resort in the state, PCMR was recognized for its family-friendly atmosphere with multiple terrain parks and pipes, and a top-notch ski schoool where the maximum class size is a tiny five people.

New this season, PCMR offers nighttime skiing and riding on the expanded Three Kings Terrain Park, and has extended nighttime hours until 9:00pm. By combining a family focus with direct ski-to access to the restaurants, bars, and bustle of

Main Street, PCMR has carved out a unique niche for itself.

Park City Transplant Cheever Stars at Canyons Grand Prix

Jonathan Cheever has his good buddy and fellow rider Nick Baumgartner to thank.

The close friends found themselves up against one another in their first heat of the day Saturday at the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Canyons Resort. After Baumgartner fell behind on turn five, he knew the only way he could get past him was to push Cheever into the fences on turn six.

"Ain't doing that to him," said Baumgartner following his elimination. "Not that guy."

On Saturday, Baumgartner's sacrifice helped Cheever take second place in the Grand Prix, earning him a ceremonial U.S. SBX Champion green jacket. Canada's Kevin Hill finished first overall; Cheever was the top U.S. athlete and U.S. champion.

Cheever, 25 and a native of Saugus, Mass., has called Park City his home for some time now and calls Canyons his home resort.

"I'm just pumped to get the national champion title at my home mountain," Cheever said. "My parents flew out to see me, so that makes it a little sweeter."

The U.S. champion held no remorse for finishing second in the Grand Prix. He said every heat he raced in was stacked and he is grateful for the opportunity to don the green jacket.

"To compete with those guys was great," he said. "Kevin Hill, who won today, was unstoppable."

Baumgartner, who won the Winter X Games boardercross gold medal a couple weeks ago in Aspen, Colo., said his relationship with Cheever was a determining factor in the decision to play it safe in the first heat.

"I made a mistake," he said. "I'm not going to take him out because of my mistake."

Cheever was appreciative.

"I'm thankful for that," he said. "This sport can get a little dangerous. He kept it safe."

A professional snowboarder by day, Cheever's night job is arguably less glamorous but more practical.

On his online bio, he calls himself a "licensed, journeyman plumber."

Now, he's a journeyman plumber who owns a U.S. SBX Champion green jacket and is looking forward to carrying that momentum into the World Cup circuit next week in Quebec.

"This is a good way to carry me through the end of the year," he said.

As Cheever passed the finish line second Saturday afternoon, Baumgartner was the first one to congratulate him. Cheever said it meant a lot coming from one of his best friends on the tour.

For the Park City resident, second place never felt so good.
