Skiing at Deer Valley Resort

Deer Valley has been named the best ski area in North America by the readers of SKI magazine for the third year in a row - 2008, 2009 and 2010. According to Deer Valley President, Bob Wheaton, the resort topped five categories including Guest Services, Slope Grooming , On-Mountain Food and Dining.

Rated the top North American ski resort in 2008 by readers of SKI magazine for the third time! The resort received a #1 ranking in 2002 and 2005. Deer Valley Resort is also consistently ranked #1 in the individual areas of dining, guest service and mountain grooming. Deer Valley is more than a winter resort - it's an experience. Since opening in 1981, Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah has become known for its revolutionary approach to ski area service. We are committed to providing a level of care rarely found at a ski resort; delivering classic, consistent, and quality service both on and off the mountain.

Exceptional customer service, consistent quality and attention to every detail are all part of the Deer Valley experience. And our four mountains, offering a wide variety of terrain types, allow guests more than ample opportunity to indulge in our 350 annual inches of light, dry Utah powder.

The Resort had invested over $9 million in improvements for the 2007/2008 ski season including: a new high-speed detachable quad chairlift, Lady Morgan Express, in the Empire Canyon area; over 200 new skiable acres, including 65 acres of gladed skiing; and nine new ski runs (three expert runs, one intermediate run and five beginner runs).

And the installation of an enhanced, energy efficient heating system in the Resort's 22 chairlift terminals; the purchase of 51 new snow guns (10 fan guns, three air/water guns, 13 portable energy efficient guns and 25 fixed tower energy efficient guns); the replacement of Snow Park Lodge's upper and lower decks with heated pavers; and the replacement of five Resort snowcats and 12 snowmobile.

MIKE DAY to Coach Park City Ski Team

PARK CITY, UT (April 13) - A couch in various capacities for oever a decade, Mike Day is making his way back to the US Ski Team as the men's alpine technical head coach. The announcement was made by Men's Alpine Head Couch Sasha Rearick.

"Mike has shown great leadership in his past coaching positions and will also bring in a strong knowledge of the ski industry from his recent years at Fischer," said Rearick.

Day began coachign 12 years ago at Carrabassett Valley Academy, where he was also once a student. Following six years of work at CVA, Day moved to Utah where he worked with the Park City Ski Team.

In 2002 he worked with the US Ski Team as a coach through the Salt Lake Winter Olympics, returning after the season's end to the Park City Ski Team. Six years ago, Day made the switch to working within the equipment industry, serving as a US racing director for Fischer USA.

Day moves in for Rudi Soulard, who took a position as women's head tech coach for Sweden.

Now, Day is happy to make a return to the coaching department where he feels he has the opportunity to do great things.

"I'm passionate about ski racing, but coaching and the athletic side of the sport is what I am most passionate about," Day said. "I've been missing it a lot and this was a fantastic opportunity to not only get back to the athletic side of it, but to get back to it at the highest level."

Day is also looking forward to working with athletes whom he built a  great coaching relationship with during his time with the Park City Ski Team.

"In Park City I was able to work with Ted [Ligety; Park City, UT], Steven [Nyman; Sundance, UT], Tim [Jitloff; Reno, NV], and TJ [Lanning; Park City, UT] as juniors, so it's great consistency for me that I've known these guys and worked with them for a long time," Day said.

Day is equally as excited to connect with a coaching staff that he feels he will integrate very well with.

"I think I'm coming into it from a great spot. I've been somewhat removed from the athletic side so I think it's a clean slate," Day said.  "The guys I'll be working together with - Josh Applegate and Ben Black - I'm excited about the three of us because we'll work extremely well together."

Looking ahead to the 2011 season, Day said that he wants to be able to build all the athletes up to recognize their potential in competition.

"Hopefully we can work hard to bring the younger guys up to a level  of competition that is similar to Ted's and Bode's. There are guys with huge potential and we need to help them move to the next level and be consistently competitive," Day said. "Hopefully I can provide an enjoyable, fun and professional work atmosphere that the guys have a good time and a lot of success in as well."

Day lives in Sunapee, NH with his wife Sarah Towslee and two children, a 3-year-old son Rudd, who will be 4 in July, and his daughter Tess who will be 2 in July.

GOING FOR GOLD

USSA's NEW HEADQUARTERS ARE THE EPI-CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

"The Center of Excellence...is a great training environment with all the support and resources I need under one roof," says Lindsey Van, the women's ski jumping World Champion and a Park City native. The Center of Excellence the new $22 million headquarters of the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) opened its gleaming doors to this past spring thanks to private donations from the USSA's Legacy Campaign endowment fund.

Located on five acres at Quinn's Junction, the center offers 85,000 square feet of high-performance athletic facilities, including strenght-training aras, a gymnasium, ski and snowboard ramps, trampolines, a nutrition center and recover/rehabilitation facilities. Plus, it features educational areas for athletes, coaches and trainers such as multimedia rooms for performance analysis and equipment workshops, as well as a full sport science lab.

USSA's headquarters are home to six primary winter sports teams: alpine skiing, freestyle skiing (including moguls and aerials), cross-country skiing/biathlon, ski jumping/Nordic combined, snowboarding (including half-pipe, parallel giant slalom and snowboard cross) and adaptive sports (including alpine and cross-country skiin). Want to see the state-of-the-art facility firsthand? Public tours can be arranged by calling the USSA at 435.649.9090.
