Foundation's Only Major Winter Event to be February 19th, 2011
Mountain Trails Foundation is preparing for its
only major winter event in the Round Valley Roundup on February 19th, 2011.
The
nordic ski race will feature three separate events 5K, 20K and 40K
races. Charlie Sturgis, executive director of Mountain Trails, said the
20K will be one lap around the Round Valley track, while the 40K will
follow as two laps.
Sturgis added he's thankful to actually get a
race like this off and running; he said to his knowledge there is no
other 40K cross-country ski race in the state.
"I never would have
believed it would happen," Sturgis said.
He said Mountain Trails
is trying to push the Roundup as a community-based event. He hopes the
race can bring out enough participants to help sustain the foundation.
The
Round Valley trail area will be temporarily off limits for those not
participating in the race on February 19th, 2011. It's a skate-style only track for
all three races.
"No place is more appropriate," said Sturgis of
the Round Valley area. "We've gone to great lengths to make the course
user-friendly."
Entry fees for the races are as follows: $70 for
the 40K, $60 for the 20K and $20 for the 5K.
Participants can
pick up their registration bags at the Miners Hospital February 17th, 2011 from 2:00pm to
7:00pm and February 18th, 2011 from 4:00pm to 9:00pm.
Each racer will be given a
cap as part of the registration bags and Sturgis said the foundation has
made specialized belt buckles for the first-second-and third-place
finishers.
The race will start at 10:00am on February 19th, 2011 and will feature a wave-style start, according to
Sturgis. The best way to register is to visit www.mountaintrails.org.

Chris Karol remembers when Jake Burton was making
snowboards in his garage. He remembers hearing about snowboards through
the skateboarding grapevine growing up.
Now a seasoned snowboarding
veteran, Karol has always enjoyed riding a snowboard and riding fast. So
it should come as no surprise that he started the First Alpine
Snowboard Team program, more commonly known as "FAST."
The program
is based in Park City for the first time this year and has a training
hill at the Utah Olympic Park along with an agreement to ride and
practice at Canyons resort.
While alpine snowboarding isn't the
most popular segment of the sport, it doesn't lack in dedicated
athletes.
"A lot of snowboarders don't even know it exists," Karol
said. "But it's racing."
Karol used to race back in his heyday,
but is now focused on promoting the sport to anyone who wants to listen.
"Alpine
has taken its own path," he said. "It used to be very tight-knit: there
used to be a tour that always traveled together."
According to
Karol, the alpine snowboarding realm is as strong as it's ever been with
many athletes getting started at younger ages and competing in clubs
into their later teens.
"It's fully legit," he said.
Along
with partner Srdjan Pantic, director of European development, Karol and
FAST are hoping the club can grow stronger.
Choosing to be
centered in Park City was simple for Karol and the club.
"We've
competed all around the world, and no place is easier than Park City,"
said Karol of Park City's resorts and proximity to a
major airport.
Heather Herde, formerly of Oxford, Conn., grew up
snowboarding in Vermont but didn't enjoy all the jumps and tricks that
came with freestyle snowboarding; she also preferred to go fast and
began competing in alpine when she was younger.
When choosing a
college, it came down to the University of Utah or Westminster College.
After a friend convinced her Westminster better fit her style, the
22-year-old Herde enrolled and will graduate in the spring with a degree
in environmental science.
Her association with FAST has only
helped her career along and she gives much of the credit to Karol.
"Chris
has helped us out a lot," Herde said. "Everybody likes him, everybody
progressed, and he knew what he was talking about."
Herde
reiterated that if not for Karol and the club she wouldn't be where she
is been today.
She has qualified for the FIS Snowboard World
Championships in Spain, but will be staying in Utah to focus on her last
semester of college.
While enrollment in alpine snowboarding
continues to grow, Karol still views it at its purest form.
"Snowboarding
hasn't changed," he said. "The gates have changed a bit. Racing is
racing."
As for FAST, it has found a home in Park City and will
continue to reach out to those who either don't know or don't believe in
the potential.
"(Karol) has been doing really well getting people
to hear about us," Herde said. "He's been really helping us out for
that extra voice."
Patrice Martin wants Exercise to be Exciting & Enjoyable
Exercise Should be Fun.
That is the idea that
drives Patrice Martin and her business, The Law of Fitness.
With
decades of experience in dance and personal training, Martin has led
group workouts with high-touch personalization at Park City Dance for 2
1/2 years.
Martin prefers group sessions because she said the
support students give each other makes a significant difference.
Support
is important to achieving fitness goals, she added.
Martin said
she doesn't consider herself a part-time instructor and The Law of
Fitness is not something she just does in the mornings. Helping people
exercise is a vital part of her life and identity. She invites students
to text, call or email her at any time with questions, and she will
contact
them if they miss a class or are in need of guidance.
"I
really want to help people," she said. "I invite contact. Whatever
support you need, I want to give it."
The atmosphere she strives
for is fun, Martin said. She hates the idea of students dreading their
workout.
"I don't want people to feel like they're exercising. I
want them to feel like they're at a party," she said. "We're a culture, a
community and a family."
Four days a week Martin offers Zumba or
funk dance classes. Because they are easy to enjoy, she finds them to be
the best way to attract new students. She also offers stretching,
Pilates, core strengthening and workouts for seniors.
If she
invites someone to try her "Butts, Guts & Such" session, they'll
likely feel
intimidated. If they come to Zumba, they get
hooked and then become interested in what else she offers to help them
achieve optimal fitness, she said.
"It's a launching pad to get
people in the doors," she said.
Martin has been teaching for
almost 30 years and knows how to customize workouts for every fitness
level. She gives one-on-one treatment in the group sessions so students
can experience the best of both methods.
Diane Rinehart said the
combination makes a difference.
"It's like
having a personal trainer although you're in a studio
with this incredible camaraderie of other people. She's so good at
focusing on individuals and helping with alignment and position," she
explained.
It is just fine for each person to be at a different
fitness level because she tailors the workout, Rinehart said. She
started going to The Law of Fitness because of back and neck pain. Now
she can't remember the last time she felt that way.
"Her knowledge
of the body is unbelievable," she added. "I've never been in better
shape."
Gayle Higman said she's been attending since the beginning
because she enjoys the workout.
"Patrice is just an extremely
dynamic class leader," Higman said. "You might be sweating like a pig
and ready to
cry, but it's still so fun. You say, 'Wow, I'm
working out, but I'm having a great time.'"
Because of The Law of
Fitness, Higman said she's able to run marathons and mountain races,
hike in the backcountry and take bicycle tours of Europe all as a
grandmother.
"The results are amazing," she added.
